Description: On April 20, 2010, an explosion occurred on the semi-submersible offshore drilling rig Deepwater
Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 24 it was found that the wellhead was damaged and was
leaking oil into the Gulf. Using high resolution satellites from NOAA's partners in Earth observations, NESDIS
scientists are able to track the location of the oil plume as it is circulated throughout the Gulf due to changing
wind and currents.
